v1.0 - Launch!

Farmiñata is finally here! I've been developing this game on and off for about a month. It was fun and chill to create, except coding the helpers which made me a bit crazy.

There was a lot of challenges and things I would do differently. I spent a lot of time meandering with ideas, and after awhile you just have to stop and ship it. Here are my key takeaways

Things I’m happiest with:

  • I think the funnest part of this game is the helpers. Playtesters enjoy giving them resources and the hats. This turned into a highlight of the game
  • The environment change was very fun, and I like how well it works with the web page

Things I would have done differently:

  • Add more personality to the helpers. Right now they are pretty static and I could have added things like houses or pets or breaks idk. Since they are the highlight, I would have added more to them
  • Hitting the piñata could be more fun. After a while it loses its edge. Maybe I could have had multiple piñatas , with different characteristic? Maybe an onion piñata, a turnip piñata, etc? The thing is I would have to redo the whole ending, and redo new game plus.
    • This actually sounds like a really good idea. Its more exciting to break a piñata for onions, then it is to buy an upgrade for it. Sound off in the comments if you like this idea
  • Some late game upgrades would be nice. I need to work on my end-games when it comes to idle games, it becomes a bit of a slog. What new upgrades could i even add?
  • I used a lot of external assets for this, but the graphics I made look pretty poor, and dont look very good next to the ones made by otterisk. I should work on my graphics skills

Things that were the most difficult:

  • Programming the helpers was very hard. There was a ton of edge cases and bugs. In the interest of time, I just stopped optimizing
  • Balancing these kind of games is always hard, and is mostly vibe based. However, you usually have to play through the whole game again. I really wish I could just have these ready from the get go, but gamedev can require exploration so it makes the process very difficult
  • So many big changes were made to this game, and it made the process take a long time. This includes: piñata was originally a slot machine, plants were in grids instead of random positions, and there used to be way more helper types.

Here is a link to the Farmiñata github repo if you are interested in the code.

Finally here is a old screenshot to show how far the game has gone. Thanks for playing!
